Review: The Secret Countess

Upstairs Downstairs Collides with Downton Abbey

After a much needed break and Holiday chaos almost behind us we took the time to expand our reading list. We received this book by our John Sandoe subscription which we have been delighted with. After giving our favorite authors and reading genres we love, they send you a book each month. This has helped expand our reading list such as this book, which we normally would have never chosen to read. Here is our take and recommendation for the Secret Countess.

This fictional novel takes place during the fall of Imperial Russia and looks at what unfolds for one individual family. The family lived in the height of luxury in Russia and had high expectations for their young daughter's future. Only as we all know once the Russian Revolution began, the country changed forever and so does their life. Her father tragically passes fighting during the revolution. The family then flees to rural England with the young girl's governess. When leaving the family leaves everything behind. This motivates the young countess to work but she has no experience at all. An old housekeeping book inspires her to apply for temporary servant position. Her mother to top it off refuses to let her work only while her mom is away on a trip she takes up being a servant for a young Earl who has returned from war. She conceals her true identity and a love triangle forms for her and the Earl.

Overall the book is an easy read and kept at a reasonable length. We couldn't help but notice the feeling of Upstairs Downstairs with Downton Abbey as we read through the book. If your fan of either we recommend this read and the author also has other books to pick up when finished that we're looking to dive into.
