Review: The Priory of the Orange Tree

A Different Take on Saint George the Dragon

If you are looking for a novel with strong female characters this is the read you have been looking for. While here at the Coven we love history novels we took a break to look at a fantasy novel. This was a read we gave a chance as it was unknown to us and was different from our normal book reads. All the reviews before picking it up show positive words and a story worth the high page number. So here is a look at a fantasy read out of our normal history programming.

This read is focused on all female leads driving the story from its start to its end, which is the first major point we must make. The story itself is a different look at the tale of Saint George and the Dragon. If you are not familiar with the tale, it's about a Dragon that requires human sacrifices and takes a Princess to be his next victim. George, who the tale says fought during the Crusades, comes across the Dragon while traveling to the town where the dragon is terrorizing. He choose to try and help the town and save the Princess. With all females leads the story takes a different look at the tale completely. Chapters show a world with vast cultures that are explained in intriguing ways. At first you aren't sure how the all the characters relate to one another because they are worlds apart but as the story unfolds their worlds become locked together. They each have a part to play in defeating an enemy that was thought to be destroyed long ago. As the book progresses each lead shows character development in moving ways that drive the story to its epic finale.

Only downside to the book is the length which is very long. For readers who like books under 300 pages this won't be for you. Which is only reason we gave it four cups out of five. The different cultures need the time to be explained so the story can develop to its ending. In the end I recommend this book to fantasy fans who love worlds that have been created and explained very well. The length to me was no issue and the ending worth the time spent reading.
